Session: Sentinels of the Multiverse:: Citizen Dawn dealt with easily - did we play Savage Mana right?

I recently played a 4-player game of Sentinels (base set only) against Citizen Dawn in Megalopolis. We did not use the advanced rules as two people were playing for the first time. We won the game quite easily with everyone within 10 HP of their max.

Our team:
Tempest
Haka
Bunker
Visionary

What seemed to be the key to our winning was that Citizen Dawn never flipped, mainly due to the fact that nearly every citizen was dispatched by Haka with Savage Mana in play. It seemed to us that citizens underneath Savage Mana were not considered "in the trash" for the purposes of flipping Citizen Dawn. Is that correct?

We weathered the initial setup of three citizens which involved the lowest HP hero taking damage, reducing damage to citizens, and increasing damage dealt by citizens. Most of the initial citizens ended up in the trash via Bunker but after we got that under control we only let Haka take out further citizens and put them under Savage Mana. Megalopolis forced some discards and other distractions but the main flow was: Tempest heals everyone for two, Haka takes out citizens, Bunker is in turret mode shooting at Citizen Dawn with grenades and what not, Visionary gets rid of ongoing cards or brings back hero ongoing cards as needed, and everyone contributes to taking out environment threats as needed. The last turn saw Citizen Dawn taking almost 20 damage from Savage Mana plus Turret Mode combined.

It all seemed rather easy after dealing with the initial setup. Only once did we ever have a combination of citizens out that triggered each other, and we dealt with that after one turn. Did we just get lucky with the hero combinations and villain card order? I thought Citizen Dawn would be much more difficult. It felt as if we were playing something wrong.
