I've been eyeing SotM for some time now and yesterday I grabbed the Vassal module to try it out. My experience was somewhat disheartening. The first game was Sakuko (Tempest) and I (Ra) against Baron Blade in Megalopolis. From the get-go we had absolutely no chance at all. Now we are experienced coop players and work very well as a team, but there was just nothing we could do - Baron Blade knocked out Ra and stomped Tempest into low single digits, then reached the 15 trash just before he actually got to take Tempest down.
We had no idea how you could win this. I mean, we just. got. destroyed.
Today I decided I'd play a little on my own. I have read that 2 heroes is not recommended so I played 3 heroes (Legacy, Haka, Bunker) against Warlord Voss in Megalopolis.
I utterly humiliated him. None of my heroes ever came close to being threatened while Voss could hardly get a single minion out.
Next try. Again I took 3 heroes (Haka, Fanatic, Tempest) and brought the battle to Baron Blade in the Ruins of Atlantis. A few turns in I managed to draw some lucky cards and emboldened Tempest who had his armor card and elemental thingy out. I was now able to heal all heroes for 4 HP a turn which went up to 6 when I drew the environment card that increases all damage and healing by 1. The good Baron never scratched my heroes - in the end, I won with everyone at full HP.
I just don't know with this game. Is this common? So far I found it either impossible (playing with 2 heroes) or no challenge at all (3 heroes). Have we lucked upon some well-known combinations that are obviously horrible / overpowered? I have to admit that it kinda makes me rethink buying the full game.
