It's not that you need particular heroes to beat a particular boss; it's that:

1) You want a good mix of different types of heroes. Just like in dungeon crawl, if all heroes are Fighters or all heroes are Wizards, you will lose. You need a good mix of the different classes. This isn't a problem with the design; it's a problem with the implementation - the game doesn't really teach you which heroes belong to which "classes" even though they are obviously divided into distinct types. They want you to learn it on your own, which I feel was a bad call. That's why we work so hard trying to classify them on these forums, because heroes of different classes will work well together.

2) While you don't need particular heroes to defeat particular villains, some heroes will do badly against particular villains. Wraith, in particular, is vulnerable to certain villains and in certain environments since she relies on equipment so heavily. Likewise, if the expansions include any villains or minions that make themselves immune to fire, you may want to reconsider taking Ra into battle. But these exceptions are very rare, and usually obvious after playing even once with the character.

Also, it's FINE to not like particular heroes. I only like playing with about half the heroes that come in the box, personally, but that's okay because some players actually seem to like playing Bunker or Heka.

While it's fair enough to say you don't like the randomness or that the game isn't well suited to you, it's unfair to say that it's a bad design, that the game doesn't work well, or that it can only be played one way.
