As you've noted, huge combos are not the central part of the game (though they are a]/i] part). A lot of the game is in figuring out how to make the best situational use of the cards you have available. The strategy part of the game is more on the team level than the hero level - ie making sure that all the threats that need to be dealt with can be dealt with and figuring out which person is best equipped to deal with which threats at any given time.

You may like the game more as a solo game, or as two players playing two heroes each. This cuts downtime, obviously, and you can think more about about team strategy rather than just your own individual character. It's also common for at least one hero's deck to just not come out in a helpful order so they don't end up doing much, so having multiple heroes to control keeps that from being as frustrating.
