My 7 year old is fast becoming my main gaming partner as well (and we live in Champaign.)We just played Ravenloft this weekend. He enjoys it but usually his interest fades near the end until the final boss battle.
He currently loves Legendary and seems to always win. I taught him and the rest of the family Escape: The Curse of the Temple and it was possibly the biggest success I've ever had. Everyone wanted to play again and again. King of Tokyo is very popular here and both the kids like Jaipur. Flashpoint was also recently successful. Flash Duel and Dragonheart are other quick 2-player games that have worked well.
We tried Claustrophobia and a simplified version of Mage Wars but he got too upset when I attacked his guys. He's learned to hold a hand of cards but he struggles when games give him too many options. He also tends to prefer coop games.
We stop by the Gopher frequently to look at games. Currently he is eyeing the DC Deckbuilding game and Puzzle Strike. We'll see.
