Maybe during setup instead of a selected hand of cards at the start, you let everyone draw 6 (instead of 4) cards, choose 4 to keep and shuffle the unchosen 2 back into the deck.
So it isn't a chosen set of cards, exactly, but it is a greater chance of having a starting hand that you feel could work well as a coherent strategy.
(as a total aside, i don't think having a chosen starting hand is something that would work for me or my game group -- it would reduce the 'think/adjust/strategize on the fly aspect' and also reduce the surprise of discovery new tactics with card combinations that you did not consider before - but that's just me. if you think such a thing would work for you, by all means go for it!)
