I have played over 30 games (only logged about 20), but have only lost about 15-20% of the time. Granted, I'm not playing on advanced (might try that soon), but most of the time you do end up winning even if it is just barely. I wouldn't say that the game is easy, but there are easier villains to fight and easier environments to fight in.If you are just playing with the base game, Citizen Dawn will probably be the biggest challenge in the box and the hardest environment is probably Wagner Mars Base. If you want just pure punishment, definitely pick up the Rook City expansion as those villains and environments are very much slighted to help villains be even stronger and more of a challenge to the point where you won't win fairly often. However, Infernal Relics and Shattered Timelines are more balanced so you could see the games go either way.
Overall, thematically speaking you want the heroes to win. How often does evil triumph over good? When it does, it is devastating. For a story challenge, I suggest following a variant that one person put up where you go through fighting different villains in different environments trying to "capture them all." If a hero is incapacitated, they are incapacitated until the heroes win and can bring back only one hero per game. If they lose, they are all incapacitated until you gain them all back or lose the whole campaign. Personally, that sounds fun.
